Cory Aquino: We all make mistakes...

Some say former Pres. Corazon C. Aquino's move on apologizing to former Pres. Joseph Estrada regarding her mistake on supporting the "EDSA 2" movement which ousted the latter in 2001 was her bravest and most honest showing so far. Others say that Aquino's act just proved that the first lady president of the country has lost credibility and firm standpoint through her own words. Senator Gordon lately baptized the former president as Sorry Aquino.

Though it unfortunately took a long time for then Pres. Aquino to realize her mistake, she still deserve a standing ovation for what she did. It takes a lot of courage for a person to acknowledge something you did wrong. In the case of Cory Aquino's, that mistake was not any ordinary to its extent. It was not ordinary for someone who hold the confidence of the Filipino people. Not just a pea-sized mistake for someone who have the ability to make people pour unto streets to seek reform and oust the one which seats on the chair of the land's highest office. It changed the fate of this struggling nation.

Some of the nearest figures to the former president doubt the sincerity of her asking-for-sorry act. And there's been news reports on the issue whether Cory was serious or not. We can't deny, based on clips of videos on TV, that the former president indeed made her act a joking type. Yet, it is still inadequate for us to be able to arrive at a conclusion that she was not serious at that point. Remember, "jokes are half-meant". With the Aquino clan in the opposition side, that joke was certainly not half-meant. Aquino's sorry serves as a confirmatory symbol that she and her clan are now on in indistinguishable plane with Estrada's and the Opposition.

Committing a mistake is a natural part of a person's life. What is important is that we must learn to acknowledge that mistake and ask due apologies for its consequences, especially when it concerns the interest of not just a few but of many - in Cory Aquino's case, the Philippines'.
