Tacloban City: Yes or No to "Highly Urbanized Cityhood"?

Today, registered voters of Tacloban City in Leyte will pour into polling precincts to participate in the plebiscite that will decide the fate of the city if it is to move higher than its current component city status to highly-urbanized city status or not.

What is a Highly-Urbanized City?

Highly-Urbanized Cities are cities with a minimum population of two hundred thousand (200,000) inhabitants, as certified by the National Statistics Office, and with the latest annual income of at least Fifty Million Pesos (P50,000,000.00) based on 1991 constant prices, as certified by the city treasurer. There are currently 32 highly urbanized cities in the Philippines, half of them located in Metro Manila.

The current HUCs in the Philippines are the following:
Some of its benefits include having direct budget from the national government, more investors will be attracted to invest, the city will be independent from Leyte Province, there shall be an improvement in the infrastructure.

Increase in tax rates among its residents is cited the most pointed reason why some say "no". Further, taxi cabs shall roam the city which will result to the removal of MCHs from the main thouroughfairs, as rumors say.

Somehow, there are more reasons why a Taclobanon should write "YES" on his/her ballot today than a anti-progress "no".

If Taclobanons will favor their city's HUChood, we'll know in the next few days.
